Goodbye Golden Handcuffs, Hello Golden Parachute?

(Golden Showers optional)

So long story short, the company that I work for has a service contract with a large bank. We service the machines that they own in-house, machines that they use to process things like mortgage and credit card statements. Said Large Bank lost multiple billions of dollars this year and is now closing the building in which I work, effectively terminating my employment.

Already pretty much finished with the job and ready to find something else to do, I was dragging my ass trying to find a new job due to the slow job market in the area and the fact that I'm making quite a bit of money (golden handcuffs in effect), but now my hand has been forced.

I have roughly 3 and a half months to find a new job. Opportunities exist within my current employer to go up the ladder, pretty readily due to my performance, including an open offer as a traveling technical support engineer, pushing me up around $63,000/year. The problem with this is, the job sucks and you are effectively a hired bitch at the beck and call of multiple people, and it is also a salaried position in which other people I've talked to in that position say 60-70 hour workweeks are not uncommon. ANYway, point being, I don't want to do that and I don't want to move right now for various reason, so here I am, at a head.

So here we go, time to Ride the Walrus®

Midnight Warrior

I started the night shift last night, 6pm to 6am and boy did it suck ass. The night just crawls by and there wasn't much to do; I even did actual work to stay busy, which is well beyond my normal routine.

In other news, I had a great (although not entirely original) idea for the current political campaign. The scope of my idea goes back to the late eighties/early nineties when gangs and other various ruffiians around the country began to accept the Oakland Raiders as their personal team. Drawn to the Black and Silver or the rough image of the team at the time, the team gathered up tons of fans, though they weren't the kind of people you really wanted to say were "on your side."

An analog of this idea is applicable to the current presidential primary. It's no secret that the majority of gays, atheists, PETA, etc are not Republicans, and while the Democratic candidates may not completely match their views, they are definitely the lesser of two evils. With this in mind, I propose that the various coalitions of these groups facetiously endorse candidates from the Republican party. PETA for McCain, atheists for Huckabee, gays for Romney, thereby polarizing other groups and individuals that may be thinking about voting for these people.

The groups, obviously, will not actually vote for the Republican candidates, but simply put their negative public image to good use and knock these dumbasses off the wall.

Game Review - Assassin's Creed - Fatwah Edition

Assassin's Creed - Stealthy, socially interactive assassination game or high-speed murder simulator?

I'm going with the latter. The game sets up early to keep you blending in, sneaking around, killing only when you have to, and all sorts of other boring shit. What I've found out about AC though is that it's a hell of a lot more fun if you just kill everyone in your way.

The combat system is a little rough, but it flows pretty well and allows for easily timed counter-attacks. What this does is set you up for your unfettered killing rampages with very little resistance. For instance, the game likes to set up defended areas and prompts you to pick off the edge guards and move in for a quick kill. But what fun is that? Ramp the bitch. Run in and kill anything that moves, and unless you get unlucky, you won't die.

I guess it's kinda ruining the sneaky feel of the game, but I find myself cackling like a madman while I slaughter entire squads of men.

Yakkof Smirnof said it

This would be a perfect "In Soviet Russia...." joke, but I'll stick with the facts, ma'am.

Chess Legend Gary Kasparov was jailed for 5 days after leading a group protest during the current Russian general election. According to Russian law, this is illegal, so off to the slammer he goes. Well, one of his komrades decides this is unjust and protests out front of the jail where Kasparov is being held. Due to the wording of the Russian law prohibiting group protest, 1 man is not a group, so... loophole! Off he goes with a sign reading "Free Gary Kasparov".

So what would any stand-up "democratic" law enforcement agency do? Yeah... pay a guy to go out and stand next to the protester in from the jail. Guess who's leading a "group" protest now? Off to jail with ye.

So Warren Buffet, the world's 4th Richest Man, made a comment today that he doesn't think he, or other people with his level of income, pay enough taxes.

Over the past few years, taxes have slid down, becoming a burden on the middle class. Case in point, a survey of Mr. Buffet's office showed and average tax rate of 32.9% while he pays only 17.7%

More Shit Here

Burning Car =

Burning Car = Shit just got real.

We went and saw 30 Days of Night tonight. It was pretty much damn good horror, pretty gory at times, but not ridiculous (other than a few axe/head confrontations).

I realized something about movies, horror / survival movies in general while watching it though: When you see a burning car, shit is about to go down.

Normally, when a car catches fire, there's a reason; a car accident, proximity to another fire, etc. The fire is usually put out fairly quickly because people generally get an attachment to their cars, both financially and mentally. But when you see a car on fire for no reason in a movie and it's just sitting there fucking burning, you might as well pack up and get the fuck outta Dodge, cause shit just got real.

I have a pretty large army done up, just trying to find a good place to stick them and get the pics.

The brave men of Bravo Force will face off the Giant Snail, Giant Ant, Spinosaurus, and a special guest appearance by BATMAN.

I never filled the warranty info out all the way, but since they're having so many blowouts, they're not looking real close on that.
Transformers 2, and 2 trailers

Transformers 2. Ok, it wasn't exactly FILM, but fuck me running, what a damn awesome movie. It was really over 2 hours of agape disbelief at the sheer ridiculousness of everything involved.

The point of this update really wasn't this movie though, but 2 of the previews before it. Holy shit if I didn't get a giant boner for the "I Am Legend" preview and the untitled JJ Abrams movie.

I Am Legend. Will Smith is the last man on Earth. He's stranded in New York City. I won't ruin the twist for you, but the scenes of him ALONE in NYC are awe inspiring.

Untitled JJ Abrams movie, nebulously named "The Cloverfield Project" appears to be a monster movie, internally referred to as "The Parasite". There aren't any hard facts out on it yet other than it's probably a monster movie, and the entire thing is shot from the perspective of civilians with video cameras, though it should be a lot higher quality than Blair Witch, i.e.

WTF

Today at lunch, my boss calls me rather confidentially and says we're heavy by one guy at the site. No sweat off my back cause I'm golden there and I know it. So he rambles on for a few minutes and drops the bomb on me that I was expecting... but not for about 2 more years. He wants to make me a TSE (Technical Services Engineer - Basically the 2nd level support guys that travel around an area and solve problems)

So anyway, it was alluded to me that the base pay for this position is around $62k/year. This is not a typo. This is nearly double what I make now. Before I go shitballs crazy and say yes, I have to consider a few things about this position that I don't like. So in Lushbaugh fashion, here goes the compliment sandwich:

Sandwich

Travel - I fly ok, but not great. After a flight, I usually like to be completely idle/sleep for about 10 hours due to my motion sickness problems. This grace period may not be an option.

Perks - You get $40/day per diem for food, you get to bank airline/hotel miles, AND you either get a company car or like $400-$600/month for car allowance (lease, buy, gas, whatever)

Working Salary - 62k/year is nice, but from a lot of the other TSEs I've talked to, you work like a fuckin' dog, and salary = no OT. When it hits 5 o'clock, you can't just leave and that sucks.

There's a lot of other shit to consider too, and I guess I have some time to think about it. So the super question is... take the job, make mad bank, and be more miserable than I am now OR

Don't take the job, still make decent money, and get to come home every night/not get home at 10pm on friday night every week.

Suggestions, comments... so like Rach's mom, I'm taking all comers.

Snow?

I guess P-Town got a little snow. I got out just in time in seems, but at the same time, I kinda wish I was there cause I love a good catastrophe. I've only got a car to worry about, and it's insured.

NC was nice yesterday, but it's cold and rainy now. Bleh. I wanna go drive around in the snow like a crazy person.

Iowa

WTF, I'm in Iowa.

It finally caught up with me at work and they sent me out on Sunday. Well I got about 25miles from home and cut ANOTHER tire. The dipshit who owned my car before me put wheels on it that were entirely too large, and the tire rubbed up against the metal shock cover in the wheel well.

So I got an extra day off, and then left at 815 Monday morning to drive to Tire Rack for another pair of wheels, then an almost 8 hour drive to Iowa, followed by 6 hours of work. So I'm on second shift, which is gonna catch up to me tonight probably. I'm used to going to bed at 10, and now I'm getting off WORK at 3am.

It pretty much sucks here, another crappy hotel with paper thin walls and floors (so bad that the fatass in the room next to me shakes the ENTIRE FLOOR when he walks) and the site isn't much better. The building is awesome, new, and clean, but the site isn't set up yet. The parts cabinets are... nonexistent and the leader Tech is a douche. So I'm here till the Saturday night shift, which means I won't get home till like 9pm on Sunday night, singlehandedly ruining 2 weekends in a row for me, and knowing how this shit works, I'll have to be at work at 6am on Monday morning.

Lame. This is all so terribly lame.
